Wednesday, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a time to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and the families and communities forever impacted. It is also a moment for all of us to reflect on this history and our role in reconciliation.
We at the Brentwood Bay Resort respectfully acknowledge we live, work, and play in W̱SÁNEĆ territory.
Our aim at Brentwood Bay Resort is to honour the original people of this land without exploiting their knowledge or world view. Neither do we wish to undermine the importance of Saanich Culture and Language, which are an expression of their relationship to this land. In the truth part of Truth and Reconciliation, is that settler treatment of the Saanich people, as with all First Nations Peoples, leaves much to be desired.
Our hope is to lend a hand, however small, in improving our relationship with the first people to call this place home long before any other people landed here.
Our Commitment
Living and working on W̱SÁNEĆ territory carries responsibility. Reconciliation is not only about acknowledgment— it’s about action. As part of our commitment, we will:
- Continue to provide learning opportunities for staff to better understand Indigenous histories, cultures, and perspectives
- Build relationships with local Indigenous communities through dialogue, collaboration, and participation in community events
- Explore ways to integrate Indigenous voices into our training, guest experiences, and workplace culture
- Support Indigenous-owned businesses and artists by sourcing locally whenever possible
How You Can Take Part
On September 30 and beyond, we encourage you to:
- Wear orange as a visible sign of remembrance and commitment
- Learn about the history and lasting impact of residential schools
- Listen to Indigenous voices through documentaries, podcasts, books, or community events
- Reflect on how your daily actions can support reconciliation
- Share your learning with family and friends to extend the conversation
- Support Indigenous-owned businesses and artists in our community
Moving Forward Together
Reconciliation is not a single day of recognition — it is an ongoing journey that demands humility, consistency, and action. Each of us has a role to play in shaping a more just and equitable future.
Thank you for marking this day with respect and intention.
