Art Program

Our aim at Brentwood Bay Resort is to honour the original people of this land without exploiting their knowledge or world view.  We respectfully acknowledge and gratefully live, work, and play in W̱SÁNEĆ territory.  Our hope is to lend a hand, however small, in improving our relationship with the first people to call this place home long before any other people landed here.

With Gratitude to our Artists

In the truth part of Truth and Reconciliation, is that settler treatment of the Saanich people, as with all First Nations Peoples, leaves much to be desired. As we consider our own role in this treatment and our role in reconciliation, we endeavour to thank and respect all the artists who have been in our space over the last 20+ years and to support local Indigenous artists and feature W̱SÁNEĆ artists as we look forward.

Local Artists

At Brentwood Bay Resort, we are passionate about art. Our focus is on local artists from British Columbia and we are proud to share their work with an audience of worldwide guests. If you would like to have your art showcased, do not hesitate to contact us.

Chazz Elliott

We are honoured to share that we are commissioning a new work by W̱SÁNEĆ carver Chazz Elliott.

Temoseng, (aka Chazz Elliott, Charles Elliott Jr.) was born in 1995 to the W̱SÁNEĆ and Lekwungen Nations. He was raised in W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) and still resides there.

Surrounded by family and culture, Temoseng began learning the ways of Coast Salish art and W̱SÁNEĆ teachings at a very early age. Temoseng attributes his desire to practice Coast Salish art to his father TEMOSEṈŦET (Charles Elliott Sr.). His mother Myrna Crossley-Elliott, a Salish blanket weaver, also bestowed a passion for learning about plant medicines.

Title: “Let Your Light Shine Through”

“I have lived in Brentwood Bay for 27 years and feel an intimate connection to everything beautiful about our surroundings. The sunsets are incredible and so began my inspiration for this piece.

I wanted to portray energy through an explosion of colour. A powerful combination made stronger because each of those colours matter to the final impact. Hues working together but vibrant on their own. The painting predominately a range of blues makes the sun’s rays become center stage. The vivid contrast brings the focus to the light shining through. Much like the spirit within our country and our love of all that we value about its’ diversity.

“Let Your Light Shine Through” portrays the natural beauty of our local landscape with Senanus Island central to the view. More than that the visual is meant to excite you and stimulate the energy within each of us to be mindful of our environment. May its’ sustainability remain of utmost top priority for all generations to come.” Kathryn Amission

Title: “Grandmothers to Mothers” Tribute Bear Totem

“This bear represents the passing of knowledge down from generation to generation. Which is the matriarchal custom of women passing down this knowledge.”

Frog on top of the bear head stands for wisdom, being passed on to the next generation.

The Halibut on the center starting with the head from the feet then rising up with the tall fin going inside the bear’s open mouth.  The left paw and forearm on the Killer Whale, which represents our clan sign. On the left paw with fingernails this shows the softer side of grandmother. On the right side is the Baby Bear which represents the children of today. At the bottom left side paw is a wind mast, representing the winds of change. Her right paw represents the unborn children to come.” Earl Magnussen

Art By Di

Canadian artist Di was born in Vancouver in 1984 and graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Major in Archaeology. As a self-taught artist her style evolved through the exploration of using bright solid colours and flowing lines to reduce the endless detail of life into calming, simplistic beauty.

Di’s body of work includes acrylic paintings and digital illustration. Her art has been shown in galleries on Bowen Island, Vancouver, Victoria and in private collections across North America. Recently she created three murals for the BC Children’s Hospital and her 2021 solo exhibition ‘Art for Sea to Sky’ raised funds and awareness for conservation initiatives in Howe Sound. Di works from her home studio on Bowen Island where she is often found exploring land and sea with her husband, daughter and two dogs. Current works can be found at the Brentwood Bay Resort, Van Dop Gallery, Catching Stars Gallery or online at www.artbydi.ca

A person sits cross-legged on the floor, immersed in the art of two vibrant orca paintings. The left captures an orca against a blue sea and sunset sky, while the right showcases an elegant tail with sparkling water beneath a golden Di sky.
Misha Smart, a smiling person with long hair, is wearing a black apron and sitting casually on the floor. They are in front of a colorful wall featuring leafy patterns, dressed in a white T-shirt and ripped jeans.

Misha Smart

I grew up on Piers Island where I was surrounded by tall trees, sandy shores and a salty breeze. I spent my days hunting for crabs, building forts in the mossy forest and riding my bike along the dirt road. I spent my nights swimming in the phosphorescence and sleeping outside, waiting for the next shooting star. I continue to do these things today and encourage anyone taking the time to read this to do the same. These experiences do not tire with age.

Through the works I produce, I aim to share my vision of the West Coast of Canada. Those who have experienced this magical place know the wonders it beholds and the sense of freedom and empowerment it instills. I feel so fortunate to live in such a place and aspire to communicate this with my audience.
