Tuesday, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a time to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and the families and communities forever impacted. It is also a moment for all of us to reflect on this history and our role in reconciliation.
We at the Brentwood Bay Resort respectfully acknowledge we live, work, and play in W̱SÁNEĆ territory.
Our aim at Brentwood Bay Resort is to honour the original people of this land without exploiting their knowledge or world view. Neither do we wish to undermine the importance of Saanich Culture and Language, which are an expression of their relationship to this land. In the truth part of Truth and Reconciliation, is that settler treatment of the Saanich people, as with all First Nations Peoples, leaves much to be desired.
Our hope is to lend a hand, however small, in improving our relationship with the first people to call this place home long before any other people landed here.
Our Reconciliation Mandate for Brentwood Bay Resort
Honor Indigenous rights and title; advance respectful relationships; and embed reconciliation into how we employ, buy, host, tell stories, and steward land and water.
This mandate maps to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action—especially #43–44 (UNDRIP), #57 (public-service training), #62–65 (education), #79–83 (commemoration), #84–86 (media), #87–91 (sport—anti-racism), #92 (business & reconciliation), #93–94 (newcomers/citizenship)—and selectively reflects #13–17 (languages), #18–24 (health), and #67–70 (museums/archives).
